IN A CORNER OF THE CAR PARK THE POPPIES STILL GROW

This painting was inspired by a visit to B&Q, where in a neglected corner of the car park I noticed poppies and ox-eye daisies growing amid the rubble.  I am always thrilled when I find wild flowers breaking through the concrete jungle of modern towns. I used a variety of mark makers to show the complex weave of plants. I aimed to make the marks rich and textured and colourful, using thick paint, knives, scrapers, sticks, whatever I could find to leave the impression of the rich tapestry of flowers and grasses.  To me this is a joyful painting, celebrating the triumph of nature.

This painting was a finalist in the British Art Prize in 2022
